Coal Supply
The 4.8 million tonnes/year of coal burnt at Eraring Power Station is sourced from three mines in the local area. Under the Gentrader arrangement with Origin Energy, all new coal supplies to the station must be sourced by Origin Energy.
Eraring Power Stations’s coal supplies are low in sulphur by world standards. Low nitrogen oxide burners ensure that NOx emission standards are easily met.
Eraring Power Stations’s fabric filter dust collecting plant – the largest of its type in the world – has been designed to reduce particulate emission in the flue gas from 46g/m3 to 0.05g/m3. This emission is well below limits set in the Clean Air Act. The plant for each boiler has 40 separate cells with a total of 47,360 acrylic bags.
The system functions like a vacuum cleaner, removing dust particles from power station chimney emissions. Flue gas temperature to the fabric filters is controlled to 120 degrees Celsius by admission of attemperating air to maintain maximum bag life. About half of the reclaimed ash is sold for use in the manufacture of concrete and building products and in road base.
The ash handling plant collects and extracts furnace ash and economiser grits and conveys them as slurry to the ash disposal area.
