International Wind Scale
The Beaufort Scale is a measure of wind speed in laymans terms originating in England and used around the world.
Beaufort Scale 0 - calm - 0km/hour Tree leaves don’t move, smoke rises vertically, sea is calm 1 - light air - 1-5km/hour Trees leaves don’t move, smoke drifts slowly, sea is slightly rippled 2 - slight breeze - 6-11km/hour Tree leaves rustle, flags wave slightly, small wavelets or scale waves 3 - gentle breeze - 12-19 km/hour Leaves and twigs in constant motion, small flags extended, long unbreaking waves 4 - moderate breeze - 20-29km/hour Small branches move, flags flap and ripple, waves with many white caps 5 - fresh breeze - 30-38km/hour Small trees sway, flags flap and ripple, moderate waves with many white caps 6 - strong breeze - 39-50km/hour Large branches sway, flags beat and pop, larger waves with regular white caps 7 - moderate gale - 51-61km/hour Whole trees sway, large waves, (heaping sea) 8 - fresh gale - 62-74km/hour Twigs break off trees, moderately high sea with blowing foam 9 - strong gale - 75-86km/hour Branches break off trees, shingles blown from roofs, high crested waves
