Eraring Power Station

Eraring Power Station is sited in a natural dip on the western shore of Lake Macquarie, near the township of Dora Creek.  Extensive tracts of land separate the power station from the local community, reducing any visual impact and also keeping noise levels low at the buffer zone boundaries.

Construction of Eraring Power Station started in 1977.  The first generating unit went into service in 1982, the second and third units in 1983, and the fourth unit was commissioned in 1984.

Eraring Power Station was initially operated using analogue electronic control systems, supported by computer monitoring systems. A new digital control system is being installed, which is expected to be complete by the end of 2005. Eraring Power Station

Eraring Power Station operates four 660-megawatt generating units.
Each generator is connected to a pair of generator transformers.
The 5.2 million tonnes/year of coal burnt at Eraring Power Station is sourced from five mines in the local area.

The cooling water flow for steam condensation (main turbine condensers and steam feed pump condensers) is drawn from Bonnell’s Bay, Lake Macquarie, passing under Dora Creek through a concrete tunnel (caisson) and open canal. This avoids disturbing the creek’s tidal flow.
